In NC Millennials are Moving to Raleigh

In NC Millennials are Moving to Raleigh

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 22, 2018

Abberly Grove Apartments, Raleigh, NCRaleigh and Charlotte have both been included in a list of the top 25 cities where millennials — individuals currently aged 25-to 34-years-old — are moving, both ranking higher than New York City and Washington, D.C.

The data TIME collected shows that Raleigh — ranked 16th — experienced a 4.2 percent increase between 2010 and 2015 in the population of millennials, coming out to an increase of 677 individuals, while Charlotte — ranked 18th — experienced a 4 percent increase during the same time in this population, coming out to an increase of 1,372 individuals.

The majority of urban areas in the study experienced some level of increase during this time period, but some urban areas did experience some level of a decrease.

All the cities that experienced a decrease were relatively near an urban area that was experiencing a growth during the period, typically within in the same state or in a bordering state.

UNC Career Services' Undergraduate First Destination Report, which annually surveys May graduates, collects data from March of students' spring semester to the December after their graduation.

The most recent available survey data was on UNC's Class of 2016. Out of that class, 83 percent of the entering first-years were in-state students. After graduation, 58 percent of the class stayed in North Carolina. The next three regions were the Northeast at 8 percent, the Mid-Atlantic at 8 percent and the Southeast at 7 percent.

There are strong economies in both regions, and the cost of living is less than in northern cities for millennials.

The presence of the Research Triangle Park in and around Raleigh and the continuous growth in Charlotte represent appealing factors for millennials. The future for students holds many opportunities.

They are graduating in an area that is abundant with jobs, and if they wanted to stay in the area that they graduated in, they certainly could. The biggest takeaway is the healthy job market.

North Carolina: Millennials Are Moving Here

North Carolina: Millennials Are Moving Here

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Abberly Grove Apartments, Raleigh, NCAccording to Pew Research Center estimates there are around 71 million millennials in America and they are expected to surpass the number of baby boomers in 2019. That makes millennials a coveted generation for cities looking to bolster their workforce and tax base. But millennials are notorious for their quixotic preferences and figuring out where they will head to next can be difficult. It’s a worthwhile undertaking though: where millennials decide to move has enormous impact on local markets, from the cost of a mortgage to whether or not you will be able to find a good avocado toast in your neighborhood.

SmartAsset used Census Bureau data to find out where are millennials moving. To track millennials’ mobility, we looked at immigration and emigration data from the U.S. Census Bureau for 217 cities. Check out our data and methodology below to see where we got our data and how we put it together to create our final rankings.

Key Finding

Big Apple no more – New York took the bottom spot on this list again. In particular residents seem to be leaving the city to venture into other states. In total around 69,200 residents moved to New York from out of state while nearly 95,000 left the Big Apple for another state.

The States Where Millennials Are Moving

7. North Carolina

The South makes up the rest of the states in our top 10. The no. 2 ranking state is Texas, with a net influx of nearly 34,000 millennials, followed by Virginia which gained 18,300 more millennials than it lost. Georgia, North Carolina and Florida round out the top 10. Georgia saw its population of millennials increase by 17,600, North Carolina saw a net influx of just under 10,000 millennials, while Florida received just under 7,200.

Raleigh is Among the Best Places to Live in the Nation

Raleigh is Among the Best Places to Live in the Nation

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, August 09, 2018

Abberly Grove Apartments, Raleigh, NCNC, SC cities among best places to live in the nation, US News reports

U.S. News and World Report has a new list of the 100 best places to live in the U.S., and Raleigh and Durham come in together at No. 13.

The Raleigh and Durham areas were No. 7 in 2017.

The new list rates North Carolina's Triangle above Charlotte.

Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill are known for their research/technology roots and collegiate rivalries and are luring nearly 80 new residents each day with strong job growth and a high quality of life.

Many people who call the Raleigh and Durham metro areas home are young, friendly, diverse and educated. They enjoy dining out in local restaurants — many of which have earned national accolades — and gathering over craft beers in one of the region's many microbreweries.

Raleigh-Durham also has a strong sense of community, and the people who live in the area are friendly. The green spaces surrounding the towns, family-friendly museums and growing art and music scenes make a strong case for the area.

U.S. News also ranked the Triangle the 17th best place to retire to in the country. Charlotte is the 22nd best.

Raleigh is one of the best state capitals to live in, study says. Here’s why.

The abundance of oak, pecan and magnolia trees help the region retain rural flavor, while the downtown skyline is representative of the state capital's role as a growing industrial hub.

The publication examined 125 of the largest U.S. metro areas to find the best places to live. U.S. News used the unemployment rate, average salary, median annual household income, cost of living, crime rates, migration data, quality of education and health care, commute times and more data to determine the ranking.

Good news, singles: Raleigh, Charlotte and Durham ranked among best metros for dating.
